External Roughcasting
Traditional wet dash and harling that weathers properly. Existing chip matched where we can, tired elevations stripped and re-dashed when the old coat has had its day.
A finish you can see from the street
Roughcasting is the coat most Scottish houses are judged on from the pavement. Chip size, colour and how the dash sits on the render base all show. We sample against the existing elevation before the hopper comes out.
Hollow, cracked or cement-hard dash that has lost its key has to come off. Patching a few square metres on a gable usually reads as a patch. Re-dashing the elevation is often the honest job.
Steven has been roughcasting since 2009. The work is guaranteed, left clean at the foot of the wall, and quoted as a fixed written price before anyone starts knocking off the old coat.

Roughcasting questions
Can you match the existing roughcast?
We sample chip and colour against the wall. A perfect match on a faded elevation is not always possible, which is why a full elevation often looks cleaner than a patch.
Do you have to knock off the old dash?
If it is hollow or cracked, yes. Sound dash can sometimes take a new coat after preparation. We tap the wall and tell you before quoting.
Is roughcasting the same as rendering?
No. Roughcasting is a chip finish on a render base. A smooth or scratched trowelled coat is rendering, which we also do.
Will you protect windows and paths?
Yes. Dash goes everywhere if it is not masked. We cover openings and clean down at the end of the job.
How long does an elevation take?
It depends on access, how much old coat is coming off, and the weather. The written quote sets out the work. We do not start without that figure agreed.
