Cornice and Coving
New runs and simpler coving when restoration is not the right job.
Cornice and coving
Glasgow and Central Scotland
Existing ornamental plaster repaired, moulded and run back in. Damaged lengths and mitres made good so the ceiling line reads as the original, not a patch.
Restoration is for plaster that is already on the ceiling. Cracked mitres, missing lengths, and detail buried under paint are the usual brief. It is not a new catalogue run on a new board.
If enough of the profile survives we take a mould or run the repair into the existing line so the join is not a step. If the profile has gone, we say so. Filling a gap with a near-enough stock section is fitting, not restoring.
Rooms that are being skimmed or reboarded often force a choice: the cornice comes off and goes back, or it stays and we make good around the new ceiling. That depends on whether it is still keyed, not on keeping everything at all costs.

Often yes, enough to read the profile again. Layer on layer of gloss can bury the moulding. We clean what we can without destroying the plaster underneath. A photo of a corner usually shows how far it has gone.
If the key has gone and the plaster is hollow along the wall, it will not take a repair. Better to take it down and discuss a new run than to glue failing lengths back up. We will say that from looking at it, not after we have started.
Yes, when there is a clean length to copy. That is how missing sections get run back in so they match, rather than looking like a different cornice butted on.
Yes. A chimney breast, a bay, or the wall that lost a length in a leak are common. The repair still has to meet the surviving mitres, so we work to those, not to a new line.
It depends whether the cornice is staying up. If the ceiling boards are coming down, the cornice usually comes with them and goes back after. If we are only skimming, we often restore first so the skim can finish clean to the run.
