The coat has to suit the wall
Render fails when the mix is wrong for the masonry. Older brick and stone often want lime. Later blockwork will take a sand and cement scratch and float. We look at the wall before we talk colour.
Preparation is most of the job. Loose existing render comes off. Open joints are taken back. A new coat on a dusty, hollow background is a short-lived repair.
This is not roughcasting. If you want a wet-dash chip finish, that is a different page. Rendering here means a trowelled weather coat, including traditional scratch and lime work.

Rendering questions
What is the difference between rendering and roughcasting?
Rendering is a trowelled coat. Roughcasting throws or lays a chip finish on top of a render base. If you want the traditional Scottish harled look, see the roughcasting page.
Do older houses need lime render?
Often yes. Hard cement on soft brick or stone can trap moisture. We look at the masonry and recommend lime where a cement coat would fight the wall.
Can you render over existing pebbledash?
Only if the existing coat is sound and we can key it. Hollow dash has to come off. Covering a failing coat just hides the problem until it comes away in sheets.
Will the render be painted?
That is a decorating step. We leave the coat sound and even. If you want a through-coloured system, say so on the enquiry and we will tell you what we can take on.
How weather-dependent is the work?
Render needs a window of decent weather. We will not lay a coat onto a soaked wall or into a frost. The quote assumes we pick the days, not fight the forecast.
